  • Place Name server down?

    I'm getting errors like this:

    2017-06-20 17:41:52 SEVERE gov.nasa.worldwind.retrieve.URLRetriever call
    Error attempting to retrieve https://worldwind22.arc.nasa.gov/geo....0,-157.5,22.5

Unclear to me if its on my end or if worldwind22.arc.nasa.gov/geoserver is actually down?

    Just try 'ping':

    $ ping worldwind22.arc.nasa.gov

Pinging worldwind22.arc.nasa.gov [128.102.22.117] with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.

    I'd say that it's down.

Looks like it is still down, no country borders or place names are working that aren't already cached

Borders server is known to be very fragile. You better use other WMS server, personnaly i use FAO which is just fine and complete:

Thanks for the pointer. Does it also have place names?

You may try data.fao.org/geo/wms to see what they got, in the WMS example. But the problem is not placenames but borders they are on the same worldwind22 so when it crashes you loose both. You may also get borders from an ESRI website (I just see than Columbia University in the example has a border layer from ESRI)

worldwind22.arc.nasa.gov is no longer pingable. It's been down for some time now?

The data.fao.org server does not seem to be accessible to the general public.

Do you have an alternative source of administrative boundary and place name data?

How about the NGA? http://geonames.nga.mil/gns/html/gns_services.html What would the LayerFactory config XML document look like to use it?

I'm seeing failures from a couple of the servers:

                  Placenames:
FINE: Execution exception during retrieval of https://worldwind22.arc.nasa.gov/geo...0.0,180.0,90.0 Read timed out

                  Open Street Map:

FINE: Response code 404, Content length 297, Content type text/html; charset=iso-8859-1, retrieving https://worldwind20.arc.nasa.gov/map...&VERSION=1.3.0
