  • Worldwind Suspension

    Just saw this news: https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/news/...ension-notice/

Can someone explain the reasoning and the short notice? Will there be any opportunity to mirror the data servers?

Any chance Worldwind will be brought back to life in the future?

  • #2
Same, even if i've built my own version, it can't run without the worldwind servers.... !!!
Why not use a REST kind of tiles like <server>/x/y/z.jpg images, that don't need any kind of maintenance ?
And deliver at least the elevations data in a way of another ?
    That would be good
Is the web version impacted too ? It uses the same servers no ?
    Anyway I'm sad these days.

I'm sad too. I think our only hope is the community comes together to find alternate solutions.

I think that's a possibility, but there is significant cost associated with running that type of free data service.

I was working on this app using NASA Worldwind as my maps. I just tried using it and it seems that i can't see the maps anymore. Did they turn the map servers off already? Whats the future? Are we going to be able to get those maps or maybe someone in the community will be able to run with it?

This is indeed very sad news. I have moved on and planned to shut down all my projects related to Worldwind so sounds like this is the time. I would suggest at least consider exporting the elevation data in geotiff format so others can use it who depend upon it.
I wish the best to the team and thanks for all the support over all the years.

Since WWJ itself is FOSS software, are there any high quality Forks on Github that the community could coalesce around?

Looking at the FAQ recently posted here: https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/news/...uspension-faq/ According to that, there are other sources of Data that may be available for free. Maybe all of the configuration could be updated to use these instead in another Github fork of WWJ? Does anyone have knowledge on how to do this?

                  Hi all,
ESRI has also a lot of free resources... and GIBS has also standard WMS-4326 access (the one for WWJ). See :
                  https://wiki.earthdata.nasa.gov/disp...MapService(WMS)
                  for example
                  https://gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov/wms/...-22.5,0,0,22.5

                    Hello Fellow Worldwind Users,
Does anybody know what will happen to this site? I saw the warning banner about it possibly being shutdown, but I am really hoping that it stays up. I am a beginner Worldwind user and have utilized this site numerous times to find worldwind related answers. I usually find the answers I am looking for without having to post a question. If this site goes down, there would be a lot of valuable knowledge that would be lost. Even if Worldwind is no longer active, I think sites like this one should stay up (maybe in view-only) so that newbies like myself can more easily find the answers to the questions they have.

Thanks for the tip! That helped a lot -- once I realized that the URL params had to be UPPER case. Do you know of any other WMS servers that could potentially replace the built in WW ones?

Here are the wms servers I used to have in my WWJ version. Have fun. I don't know if they still all work. To be put in the WMS Layer demo by a way or another. Cheers.

Anyone solve the elevation data issue? With the servers shut down all your maps will go flat. So if someone knows of a wms Bil source that will help everyone greatly else they will need to shut down their apps. :-(
