  • Change in level of Dead Sea

    worldwind://goto/world=Earth&lat=31.45864&lon=35.53003&al t=232782

The Dead Sea, located between Israel and Jordan, visibly changes levels between the 1990 and 2000 Geocover layers.

This body of water existed in the past as a narrow, shallow arm of the Mediterranean Sea that originated as the rift between the spreading Arabian and African plate opened. Eventually, uplift seperated the rift from the rest of the Mediterranean, leaving the water isolated. Its only outlet is evaporation and it is fed mostly by the Jordan River. Because salt is carried into the Dead Sea by erosion from surrounding land and salt can't leave with the water that evaporates, the salt content of the water remaining in the sea is very high.

As water from the Jordan is diverted for agricultural purposes, the balance between input and evaporation is tilted in favor of evaporation and the level of the sea goes down. A project has been proposed to bring water in from the Red Sea via a canal to maintain the current levels but no plans have been made.

Try the same with the Aral sea (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan), same effect but even worse.

There's a SVS visualization of that that's really cool.
Note: The above statement is probably an educated guess, derived from much forum reading, IRC chatting, general curiosity, etc. Use at your own risk.

The SVS is pretty nice too.

^^ your animation is better than the one in SVS imo.

(pretty dramatic situation for the people over there...)
