If we're still deciding what platform to use for the port, the following interview with the lead developer of Mono may be helpful. I particularly noticed that improvements to the virtual machine and gtk# may moot previous concerns about using Mono.

My humble input -- OpenGL or GTK. my favorite FOSS 3D app is Blender3D and uses OpenGL. My favorite image editing FOSS is GIMP with of course GTK. I really do not use Java other than a side issue. Thanks for the forum.

Mac Version would be a blast but please - NOT JAVA. Java is slow, ressource hungry and tend to hickup cpu float system units

Hi,
porting WorldWind to java + JOGL/java3D + some helping code in C/C++ (JNI) would be a great path to portability. Of course it's not the best solution for performance, but for us would be so interesting than we'ld be able to add a couple of full time developpers for this.
And, of course, Eclipse it's the ideal tool for doing the work with. It runs equaly on windows, linux, mac or sun.
greetings

What about using C++ + mozilla XUL framework + openGL - it would be quite portable.
cheers,

A Debian User
Please port it to Linux soon. It's really a shame that it's only for Windows right now. I might try it in WINE, but it's not the same.

I read today in the NY Times that "Mr. Hogan said programmers were working on a version of the software that should work with Apple and Linux operating systems. He expects it to be available next year.". Yes! Please spend some effort on developing a Mac OSX version! If you are moving from DX to OGL libraries that should make things easier. Can you get Apple developers involved? Apple folks love this kind of thing and Mac users have been excluded from both WW and Google Earth to date. A *lot* of scientists and engineers use Macs (especially NASA folks), so I am guessing that a Mac OSX version is eagerly anticipated.

Note: The above statement is probably an educated guess, derived from much forum reading, IRC chatting, general curiosity, etc. Use at your own risk.
Before asking, check the FAQ or search, and Ask a good question.
Having problems? Make sure you have Managed DirectX and .NET Framework.
Then check the Video Card Compatibility List

Bloody stupid.
First, proprietary technologies like Java _must_ be avoided.
Shame on NASA for choosing dot net.
Seems to me that you need to use libs that run on generic xwindows. This
way the port to OpenBSD, FreeBSD, etc, all make easy sense. If this thing
is truly open source, then make it so.
Avoid proprietary crap libraries like dot net.
Avoid proprietary crap graphical user interfaces like Aqua, Vista, blah blah.
If you guys can get it up and running in XWindows, it stands the hope of being
ported to every operating system in existence now and, more importantly,
for the future.
2 pennies.
