  • WorldWind on Media Center Edition

not a port ... but this is for running WorldWind on Media Center Edition. it lets you start WW from MCE, control it with a remote control, and when you exit WW it will return to MCE. it uses the WW plugin model so no code change is required

there is also 2 other plugins. one for an XBox 360 Wired Controller and another for FindingLocation using IpAddress and Microsofts Virtual Earth (local.live.com)

it will not work on an XBox 360 at all, because DirectX will not render over remote display. it will only work directly on an MCE PC using a remote control.

the 2nd plugin, is for an XBox 360 Wired Controller connected to an XP PC (doesnt have to be MCE)

to make it work on an XBox 360 :
first, there is no way to make it work directly on the XBox, it will only remote over the display through MCE.
        1) take the 2D WorldWind port, which i think is WinForms, and make that work in MCE. this will only give 3 to 5 fps
        2) port to WPF - this has 3D support but will only give 3 to 5 fps
        3) port to MCML (Media Center Markup Language) - not sure if this has 3D support?, will only work in Vista, but will ultimately render full fidelity

to make it really work directly 'on' an XBox 360 (like a game, without needing MCE) you'd need a developer kit from MS and would have to port it to native DirectX

        Thanks,
        casey

Microsoft is quite friendly with World Wind, they might even donate a dev-kit if Chris asked but I doubt he would have the time to do a port, if only Microsoft would add managed code support to the 360, although I dont think even NASA could get them to do that :(

But an Xbox is a minimum bribe level - you can send me a wireless controller but that's not all that exciting, you see

But yes - it'd be great to be able to run it on the Xbox - option 3 sounds interesting if anyone had the sheer time (or money) to do it.

                    WorldWind on Media Center Edition

Could the JRiver network command set possibly be used to control the local copy of Media Center a copy running on the same machine as HS via a network loopback which means only one protocol would be required network to make it work in any case?

man. I was thoroughly checking that kit out in Guitar Center recently and was really impressed by the finish. It looks amazing in person.
