I'm rewriting my WW2D with .NET and C#, using Tao as OpenGL wrapper. I started today and currently it can display tiled image layers. My binary can be run on Windows and on Linux _without any changes_, I think this is very good. Screenshots will be ready tomorrow.

I wish you end up with a language that suits your project best. WW2D's roadmap is impressive: started with java, continued with C+wxWidgets and ended up written in C#+Tao.
It would certainly be interesting see what has let you down in the previous languages. Especially why C# seems a better choice than Java that you used in the beginning.
