• The Voyage of Ottar

I have started on an add-on describing the voyage of the Viking chieftain Ottar as it is described in King Alfred of Essex in his version of the "History of Orosius".

I have finally managed to produce a trail file due to patient advice from engmike and Llynix (much obliged) , however there some thing I think could be improved.
If I set the <DistanceAboveSurface> too low parts of the line disappears. This is probably due to faulty height data from the ETOPO2.dos.bin file? Or is this related to the faulty georeferencing cmaxwell is referring to in this post?
http://learn.arc.nasa.gov/worldwind/forums...p?showtopic=706
I used 1:50 000 vector data (WGS84) to produce the trail, but it seems like the trail or the WW world is off by a certain distance sideways too (in addition to the elevation issue). Another thing is that the two endpoints of the line angles out in endpoints athwarth the general direction of the line. Maybe these issues will vanish when the landsat images gets new georeferencing.

Well, next step will be to make some nice icons for the places mentioned in "History of Orosius", and make some web content for URL's in the xml file.

Just a thought, would it be possible to force the trail to lie a certain amount of metres above the rendered tiles? Or does the trails have to contain height data of their own?

The first files for the add-on is available here:
The_Voyage_of_Ottar_1_1_d.exe

And a heap of gratitude to Llynix for making me able to make my own installers

Chris is working on an SRTM dataset for other servers to host. This will include much better height data and I imagine when it is finished the trail files will yet again be converted with the new data.

I know the appalacian trail suffers from the same issues. Chris might be able to explain it all better, I myself don't know why height data is included in the border files anyway. It should be applied from the height data downloaded from JPL.

Aah, this is good news
That will be something to look forward to.
And yes, I agree, downloading the height data from the JPL (or other hosts with the new SRTM dataset) into the trails would seem like a good idea.

Great work you are doing Thomas, I have your hillforts addon installed already, there is a slight problem with your installer for Ottars voyage though, it puts the OA directory in the ww DATA subdir and not DATA\WorldWindow.Earth where it should be. I llook forward to any more addons you make.

Hi bull, thank you for the tip about the faulty folder path
In the new ver.1.1.c this is corrected (see the top post in this topic). Icons with clickable url's are included, but the URL's are just links to existing sites. To produce content is time-consuming, so that will have to be included in a later version.

Kind regards,
Thomas Risan

Very cool and well done!!!
One very minor thing: on which part of the trail is the beginning? Since it's the voyage of the Viking, I presume the beginning is at the wallrus icon?

Okay, found out a big thing: the Ottar&Alfred button in WorldWind replaced the Places button
I manually removed the Ottar&Alfred files from the WW directory and now the Places button is back.
They say that there is order in chaos ...
Well, my desk is in order then.

A good point meegja,
Where was the point of departure? Well I'll have to find a way to show the itinerary sequentially.

The button issue is a known problem, it happens if you get a certain amount of buttons on your toolbar. It is not only the Ottar button that squeeezes out other buttons, the total amount of add-on's and program buttons is in some way restricted, so some of the buttons disappear. They are all available from the layer manager regardless of their presence in the button toolbar. (I suspect the SW reads the button icons alphabetically, and stops when it reaches the limit for alowed buttons. This could explain why Ottar&Alfred kick out your Placenames button. Any other suggestions anyone?)

(Ottar lived at the Island with the icon of two Viking women)

Kind regards

I just discovered that the button is not actually replaced ... seems that the buttons get re-arranged. If you look at the screenshot (from the LWR trail), you will see (if you look good ) that the Places button is now below the "The Origin of Life" button.
So the Places button is still there but it has moved *under* the main image field.

Indeed!
I managed to turn on/off the five buttons I have lying under the main toolbar, by carefully clicking at the "snippets" of button visible

It would be nicer with a toolbar where it was possible to have a menu twice the height of existing toolbar, to get better access to these buttons, though.

Don't know .... the window that WW has now to view the Earth is nice and big. Maybe an option in a next version of WW to add some menu items. Like between Tools and Help adding a menu item Trails? Then you get a drop down menu with the trails.

What I would like is a fully customizeable toolbar (for instance, I don't use the USGS buttons at all, and if I should get the urge I could always go to the layer manager to turn them on, or pick them from your suggested listbox)
