I have started on an add-on describing the voyage of the Viking chieftain Ottar as it is described in King Alfred of Essex in his version of the "History of Orosius".
I have finally managed to produce a trail file due to patient advice from engmike and Llynix (much obliged)
, however there some thing I think could be improved.
If I set the <DistanceAboveSurface> too low parts of the line disappears. This is probably due to faulty height data from the ETOPO2.dos.bin file? Or is this related to the faulty georeferencing cmaxwell is referring to in this post?

I used 1:50 000 vector data (WGS84) to produce the trail, but it seems like the trail or the WW world is off by a certain distance sideways too (in addition to the elevation issue). Another thing is that the two endpoints of the line angles out in endpoints athwarth the general direction of the line. Maybe these issues will vanish when the landsat images gets new georeferencing.
Well, next step will be to make some nice icons for the places mentioned in "History of Orosius", and make some web content for URL's in the xml file.
Just a thought, would it be possible to force the trail to lie a certain amount of metres above the rendered tiles? Or does the trails have to contain height data of their own?
The first files for the add-on is available here:
The_Voyage_of_Ottar_1_1_d.exe

And a heap of gratitude to Llynix for making me able to make my own installers
