I'm working on a large project and I was wondering if there was any way to host all my images and layers for my project on a server so that the users that wanted to use it just link to the server under WW?

Maybe just set up a WMS server...

That's probably the most straightforward solution. WW can request tiles from it just fine, and there is a lot more documentation on that than there is on setting up a WW tile server.

Why can't I just do like the people at NWW and "Instead of using overly complex format (for serving predefined chunks that is) we opted to go with pre-rendered, predefined tiles that are just stored in the file system, and can be served to the client with no further processing server side"?
I want to run a server just like the ones that NWW use but not all the data they use. I'm basically doing a whole map/world of my own, with the hwlp of my team. |

The people at NASA and WWC are using their own custom software for serving tiles. You either need to write your own software like they did, or use existing software that works seamlessly in WW, like mapserver that I posted a link to above.
