FIrst of all, I want to thank all the people working with NASA WW from an amazing program. It is truly bringing the world to our desktops. After trying it for the first time, I have been telling all my friends about it and they all love it.

BUT

The crappy thing is, that when they see the resolution provided by Google Earth they turn to Google. Today I made a quick comparison on the imagenery and the resolution with the two, and I have to admit that Google pulls the longest straw here.

Another issue is the performance; Google works so much faster with better images.

I hope that more hi'res images will be available soon. Why not even use the same image sources with google? Thats a way to direct the donations to.

Keep up the good work,
Mika

What's with the influx of these thread recently?

Google paid for the images. World Wind uses only free, public domain imagery.

So if you find some high-res free data, please let us know and we'll continue adding it to the high-res imagery addons like ZoomIt.

Also, sure we could buy the imagery...anyone got $10m hanging around?

This isn't always true. I live in Lakewood Ohio and I noticed that the EROS Ortho imagery is actually better than Google Earth if you look at the high school's track around the football field. True the EROS Ortho imagery is black and white while Google Earth is color but I live here, I know what the colors are.

It might work faster than World Wind on my computer, but it also drains my memory so much that I can't use any other program effectively or without locking up my computer.
If you want a program to play around with imagery, get Google Earth. If you want a program to use for knowledge and understanding, get World Wind.

Not to mention that you can actually use World Wind's imagery for other than your eyes. For example, we can't even post screenshots of the above-mentioned program on this forum. In contrast, a TV station recently asked to use imagery from WW (they couldn't use imagery from GE) and was quickly and freely granted permission.

Infact since it's public domain he didn't even need to be explicitly granted permission

Not to mention that WW also has imagery of several types that isn't of someone's back yard, but instead the wilds of <type remote area name here>

I have said it before and I'll say it again.. "GE is the AOL of the imaging world, releasing utter noobs on the rest of us."

You're paying for GE's imagery when you use the GE programs. And your not really allowed to use the imagery the way you would REALLY want to. Both programs have their uses.. but lets be fair.. GE is aimed at the casual user that is only really interested in seeing their house.

We would, and that's good enough for me.
