Hmm, the gmaps thing is new to that site. Use to just have the lat/lon and a description. ... now it is lat/lon and a map... and knowing how bad gmaps are on a modem... this site has now become useless for me at home

www.geonames.org

Geonames.org has combined data from nga, gnis, geobase.ca and other into one database for download. The data is also accessible as xml webservice for geocoding.
