I'd say it beats the international maps WW HAD, wouldn't you? Plus, the data is pretty stinking accurate, so far as I can tell.

So what exactly is your point here Nowak ?

Your example looks a bit like comparing JOG (1:250.000) to ONC (1:1.000.000) military maps, yeah, there is always something better, i have the netherlands in 1:10.000 topo and some of it in 1 m. resolution ortho, and it's all copyrighted, doh... <_<

Using a bit of positive energy, how about you scan these maps of yours for the rest of the world so we can add them to WorldWind ? :P

The upside: the vmap downloads a whole lot faster! :P
Gee, even on DSL that scanned map took a few seconds.

Maybe I need to look closer, but most of what I do see in terms of inaccuracy is something that could likely be corrected significantly with elevation display configs. Also, while I am sure that your map is current and of very high quality, that map most likely cannot be part of WW for the community, and it also could be imperfect in some ways. All maps are imperfect, EVEN ORTHO photos! USGS topo maps, BTW, also have roads that no longer exist. While for military and other 'critical' uses, small errors could be considered a problem, I don't see the kind of error in vmap that degrades its quality as a useful reference map which loads quickly, looks pretty good, and sure beats the @#!% out of placenames data.

Incidentally, Google Earth has towns located 50-100 km from where they exist in several countries. In one case, a village near Zadar, Croatia, is placed by Google Earth near the Slovenian border NE of Zagreb . VMap in WW has it right on the money, and offers us non-devs some transparency in WW without having to do an image overlay.

I imagine you were just making a comment, and didn't mean any harm, but please consider that nobody paid Demis for the significant bandwidth I am sure is being used, and nobody forced them to do this. I am also aware of the invaluable service that you, Mr. Novac B) , provide to WW, so I am not wishing to have any animosity or offense taken here. But it is my hope that Bart/Demis will have plenty of reasons to be happy about their decision to make this donation.

I would hope that we don't do anything to discourage people/organizations from helping in what manner and in what form they are able. Sure, everyone wants high-res orthos, but I am very grateful for an actual MAP of the world that I can look at and evaluate areas quickly and easily with a very reasonable level of accuracy and detail. Then, I can load/find images on the net/ etc. to overlay which allows me to 'georeference' by visual layer comparison. To me this is extremely useful, and something which WW has very much lacked until now.

Again, Bart, THANKS!

Seth

To all of you out there who have created add-ons for world wind, I salute you!
It takes a lot of time and effort for these wonderful people to create these fabulous add-ons. I find it hard to believe anyone would criticize any of these add-ons. If you do not like an add-on, do not download it. It is that simple.
IF I was able to create add-ons and got negative resposes for it, I would not create any more.
To add suggestions that may help the creator enhance a add-on is one thing. To criticize it is another.

The key word here is ENCOURAGEMENT, not DISCOURAGEMENT.

Again I thank each and everyone of you add-on creators and of course, the creators of World Wind!

Rick

To put it briefly,

I do not find Nowak's comments discouraging, after all he is one of the guys running Worldwind Central and he wouldn't be scrutinizing these maps if he weren't interested now would he ?

At this point we are perfectly happy testing this addon, a few hundred visitors have found it in this forum or on our website, the WMS cache is working great but that doesn't mean we are ready for tens of thousands of WW clients.

Our intention is not to become part of the standard WW installed Add-Ons, but for anyone venturing into the forum, i guess we have already become part of the WW Community.

Like i suggested in the original post, if there is enough interest and World Wind Central would like to host the tiled output, it's open for discussion...

In the mean time, i am fiddling with a huge pile of TIGER tiles here but i can't seem to get WW to go deeper then 11 levels, damnit... better keep the lid on this until WW 1.3.3 arrives B)

hehe at level 11 the screen will be extremly shaky anyway, I'll ask Chris if 11 levels is hardcoded or not.
