 Just curious
Is there a way to narrow down a search for a place? For instance there is more than one "Paris"... Paris, France; Paris, Texas, etc. |

We realized this problem almost immediately (there are approximately 2 million places with 3 million more about to be imported) and we're going to associate a "Place" with a country or geographic identity. Perhaps you will type in "Paris France" and you will only get matches that have those two keywords. Also, if anyone hasn't noticed, the searching tool is case sensitive, and that will of course be changed as well. In addition, we want to display more meta-data information about a particular place, such as the type of place(mountain, populated place, beach...), and perhaps attributes such as population or elevation. We of course are open to suggestions that anyone else might have in terms of what would be useful. Hope that helps,

Geographic point location +lat long minutes etc.. Geo/poli event location this might be something tied in Political map identifiers as in an atlas(city/state/country/group) Landforms (standard terran namings) Even tieing in resource centers(oil, forestry) however this would prolly get quite indepth however I would geuss the US DOD or other orginizations would have this data accessble and it would just be matter of crossmigration of data. Really the ammount of specification for finding regions to fit search strings is limited to the reason for a searchstring to be entered. Items of public interest may be great wonders such as the pyramids or the eiffle tower mount rushmoore etc.. However getting down to it I can see allot of more personalized searches like finding schools they may have went to or their house. River systems parklands and city streets may also be searches that traditional services like mapquest might have. I'm a little uncertain on the 'project" outline that is the purpose of the project. I tend to take things to god mode and could provide a very long list of suggestions that at the end would be somewhat of a bigbrother index. After the personalized gps tagging system was put inplace you could maybe even type in your name and find where you are? Really though, the posibilities of an organized satalite imagry system are well as usefull as knowing where anything is. Of course structures and minitrature structural mapping is just the peice inbetween throw in security systems but really how connective are we. There is allot of posibilities when adding in electronic fingerprinting etc.. however once again I'm not sure of the "project mission" as to offer reasonable answers. Political / Geographic My geuss would be many people are educated to think politically however the geographic purposes may be more akin to geo surveying .. I would hope. Geographically there are continental and regional standardized naming systems. Conventional political naming system tend to be recognized as Federal/Nationstates and there subregions. What are people using it for? |

Before the Slashdot event I was toying around with icons that would idealy shrink and grow similar to how the Rapid fire MODIS browser works. Hopefully this will lead to less clutter and speed up rendering times. A lot of fine tuning is in store for the place name finder.
