viewing blue marble with pano applet

I tried loading a small version of the nasa blue marble image into the pt viewer applet. the image is the same aspect ratio 2:1 as an equirectilinear pano. It winds up looking like you are viewing the earths surface from the center instead of from space. does anyone know if i can remap the image using panotools or make a change to the applet or use another applet to put this image on a webpage. I also have zoomify vr that creates a image pyramid of tiles so if i can process a large image if i can just figure out what I need to do to the image first. Sorry if this is a little off subject but its a little off subject on the pano boards as well. any help or clues would be much appreciated.
