I have trouble getting any detail when zooming in on Indonesia or Australia (which are all I want to look at). The connection message is coming up "trying again in 2 minutes". I have downloaded the proxy thingo - but still the same. When I try zooming in using the USGS over the USA the screen goes white after zooming in close. Please somebody help me.

USGS covers the whole of the USA - are you using USGS 1m imagery? Try somewhere else....you should get images.
Do you have a router or anything? How do you connect to the internet, and do you have a firewall?
