How to add the Urban Area icon on the NASA World Wind v1.2d toolbar

I find NASA World Wind awe-inspiring. However one function of World Wind that I wish was included was a toolbar icon for the most detailed satellite view mode, the “USGS Urban Area Ortho-Imagery” mode. All the other satellite modes have a toolbar icon. For those that don’t know, the Urban Area mode allows high detail (0.25m per pixel) colour view of various USA cities. Therefore, I’ve added the popular “USGS Urban Area” view mode as an icon on the toolbar. Previous to this add-on, this special satellite mode was only selectable by drilling down into the Layer Manager tool.

As the World Wind icon toolbar was already full of icons in version 1.2d, I’ve chosen to remove the existing ‘Lewis & Clark’ toolbar icon to make way for my Urban Area toolbar icon. The Lewis & Clark Trail function can still be used from the Layer Manager tool.

For a list of USA cities that support the Urban Area satellite mode, I recommend downloading and installing Dan’s “USGS Urban Layer” add-on, found within the World Wind Add-ons forum.

Instructions for installation:
Step 1) Update your NASA World Wind version to 1.2d, if you haven’t already. The 1.2d patch can be found in the “Updates & Patches” section of the main World Wind webpage.
Step 2) Locate your installation directory of NASA World Wind on your hard drive.
Step 3) Take a copy of the entire Configuration directory (found under the main World Wind installation directory) as a backup, and paste it elsewhere on your hard drive. You’ll need this if you want to revert back to the original toolbar later.
Step 4) Download my “Urban Area icon on the toolbar.zip” file.
Step 5) Using WinZip 9 (or another compatible Zip application) extract the contents of the downloaded file to your main World Wind directory, retaining the folder structure and overwriting existing files.
Step 6) Launch NASA World Wind 1.2d, and the new Urban Area toolbar icon will appear on the toolbar and work.

I hope you find the Urban Area toolbar icon useful.

Its broken on 1.2e it adds the button but they seem to be underneath the existing ones and therefore very thin and hardly visible... isnt there a way to just add the Urban-Area Ortho-Imagery only and not all the buttons,

Remove some of the other buttons via the xml. The UI will be redisgned in 1.3 and shouldn't have any problems with this at all. We created the add-ons menu in 1.2e to try and compensate for this shortcoming. Still not perfect, but it was a big improvement

OK, here is the 1.2e version. I've chosen to remove the USGS Topo toolbar icon to make room for the USGS Urban Area icon, but you can still use the Topo feature from the Layer Manager. Remember to take a copy of the complete Configuration folder first before installing this, as a backup. The content and instructions are included in the zip I've attached below.

Enjoy

Thanks Phil T! this is cool!

Now all I need is the entire world at urban area resolution, and the following overlaid onto the urban area images: live traffic speed data, live weather radar and satellite in 3d, wifi hotspot data, street names, & yellow pages info. All in my car tracking with gps. While im at it, how about 3d buildings?

It would also be cool if you could time-lapse tectonic plate movement & ocean levels from prehistoric times to the future.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I want to add all the functions of a program called Home Planet that shows lit and dark sides of the planet, moon info, and satellite tracking.
Wish I could program as well as imagine!

While you're at it, why don't we add live pics from all those traffic cameras they've got around, of course tilted to fit :P

Thanks for the Urban Area add-on. One problem, when I click on the urban icon then start to zoom in on any part of the U.S. it turns that particular section white. Does not show the picture. Any ideas why it is doing this?

Only some US cities have the Urban Area. In the Add-on section, there's an addon which will mark the cities with a dot - handy.
