Layer Control Applet Using ?

Hello:

Should have asked this also in last post.

Confused over the layer control options, and the buttons on the top.

Which controls ?

Can I have more than one layer clicked in the layer controls box, e.g. the JPL items and the USGS choices at the same time ?
If I do, what happens ?

Or, should only 1 box ever be checked at a time in the Layer Control Aplet ?

How do the buttons on the top of the screen, then, interface with what might be checked in the Layer Controls ? Again, which controls, etc. ?

If someone might explain all of this, would be appreciative.
