Proxy+cache of NASA WorldWind image server.
Not true. There is no NASA WorldWind image server.
There used to be a JPL Landsat server. :huh:

Will I still be able to use all those downloaded cache files or will they be lost or overwritten?

You'll still be able to use them - WW only downloads if the data isn't in the cache.
You won't lose anything :)

I'm not sure exactly how to copy the file over to the configuation folder.
Anyone want to hold my hand and help me through this process?

Hmm.. no.. not in THAT grumpy of mood yet ;)
1) Right click file and save as
2) pick a temp spot on the HD and save the file there
3) go into: C:\Program Files\NASA\World Wind v1.2\Configuration and
4) copy WorldLayers.xml to WorldLayers.xml.backup
5) copy the file you just downloaded into the Configuration folder and
6) start WorldWind

You don't put those files anywhere. Those are just visual representations of what is available. For your amusement.
You can skip steps 5 - 7.. they are just information :)

To stop it hanging on init make sure you install the mars icons. But you don't need to install the data for mars (unless you want)

Downloaded latest WorldLayers.xml and copy to Configuration folder
having problem initialising?
But older version works..filesize (36,214 bytes)
could be Martian gremlins ?
Download mars64icons.rar (4KB) (http://65.75.152.91/download.php?file=mars64icons) and unpack to WorldWindFolder/Data/Icons folder. THIS IS REQUIRED even if you dont want to use mars64 dataset.
4. Want to see Mars ?
Complete point 3 first
Download mars64.rar (76MB) (http://65.75.152.91/download.php?file=mars64) and unpack to WorldWindFolder/Data folder
- I noticed i could not unpack this with older versions of winrar. The newest version of WinRar worked.
- I wonder if the lat/long lines are correct for mars? I am not sure there is a tropic of cancer/capricorn defined for mars. If they were, they are on the wrong lattitude: should be 25degrees 12' instead of 23degrees 27' because the equatorial inclinations are (slightly) different. I am also not sure where 0 degrees longitude is on Mars.
- Above all: This is the Best program ever written in history !!!! Thank you guys !!

Actually they are, or close enough. When I matched the placenames up to mars I got the correct placename to the correct crater.

It IS still trying to connect to JPL's servers as well. The updated config file just also point to the alternative server. And that server does not have everything.. It just has what has been released as an addon pack for the cache folder.
I replaced the file .xml and added the 2 icons but nothing changed! i always get the connection error when I zoom in

Only level 0 and 1 are globaly available.
Try zooming in on an area that a cache pack has been released like mount saint helens. You'll find more data in those locations.
Hi, I have applied all the xml, png and data files.
I have no icon for mars as per the screenshots (I notice there is no lewis and clarke icon in the screenshot. This does appear on mine). Hence...no mars:(
On the upside, I am getting nice downloads from the alternate server now I have the new worldlayers xml.
Any ideas why I have no mars icon or mars display?
Thanks,
Mal

When I unpacked the Mars Icons using WinRar, they were put by default into a new sub-folder called:
..\World Wind v2.1\Data\Icons\mars64icons\*.png
(2 files)
and when I went to start World Wind, it stalled on initialisation. I copied the 2 png files up one level into:
..\World Wind v2.1\Data\Icons\*.png
and it seems to fire up fine.
However, I still get the "Problem connecting to sever message", so there is no visible improvement for me.
I'll try again later and see what happens.
Hope this helps!

Hello
First apologize my real bad english. I hope you'll understand me :)
I have downloaded WW the Nov 10th (i think I'm a lucky guy, I made it just a couple of days after the last and apparently very important update).
I'm from Paris east suburb (Lognes) in France.
The firsts 24 hours, nothing but the Blue marble 2048 !!
I changed the XML, rebooted, and everything since is 95% OK.
I say not 100% because the problems of server due to exponantial demand make extremely rare the possibility for me to download my city with high resolution.
Only one time during these three days, I catched partial details.
But this software is a dream, without exageration. I'm 46 and I was 4 when I was drawing world boundaries, reading atlas and astronomy books the first time.
I don't know if everybody realize the incredibely magic of this work.
I thanks strongly the developpers (I saw one here) and the NASA for this gift at knowledge.
Perhaps I seem exagered, a little bit theatralistic, but I don't think so : Only 30 years ago, this tool was an impossible dream for the best concerned scientists.
And know, I use it for my own at home.
Thanks again, and I hope that the technical problems of users here will be fixed quickly.

The first post on this subject, tells you which color corresponds with the map cache colors, so the color red means very much detail when you zoom in. You need to follow all steps in NOWAKS mail for this to work, because after that you you will be connected to NOWAKS server.
Its working always for me, no time outs.

I think your server is full and therefore no further downlaod of other tiles is possible.
Thats a status of a download:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 11520 bytes) in /home/virtualwww/proxy.ww.xpam.de/wms/wms.php on line 254

Hallo Nowak,
I got a lot of these messages. Maybe these message wiil be shown due an error message of the Onearth server. I changed the Worldlayers.xml to the genuine file and I got the following message:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>
<!DOCTYPE ServiceExceptionReport SYSTEM "http://www.digitalearth.gov /wmt/xml/exception_1_1_0.dtd ">
<ServiceExceptionReport version="1.1.0">

</ServiceException>
</ServiceExceptionReport>
At the moment all is working well, it was the Onearth server, I think.
Thank you for your help and your work.

Yes, that's the non-free solution :)
However, it should be noted that where Keyhole is missing data, World Wind is performing much better as Keyhole doesn't even seem to have the basic Landsat7 data. :huh: The trial of KH I used was much more sluggish in zooming in/out as well... Many annoyances for a commercial program IMHO.

Hi - having problems getting this to run correctly
1) Have download and run the installer - the new config file is correctly installed.
2) run worldwind.
3) sit and look at the "initialising" window, with a blank worldwind window behind it.
Look in the worldwind directory and find file called DEBUG_PROGRAM_START with the following content:
System.Exception: Not found
at Altova.Xml.Node.GetDomChildAt(NodeType type, String URI, String name, Int32 index)
at WorldLayers.TiledPlacenameSetType.get_Ma ximumDisplayRange()
at WorldWind.WorldWind.getRenderableObjectL istFromLayerSet(World curWorld, LayerSet parentLayerSet, LayerSet curLayerSet, TreeNode& treeNode)

at WorldWind.WorldWind.getRenderableObjectL istFromLayerSet(World curWorld, LayerSet parentLayerSet, LayerSet curLayerSet, TreeNode& treeNode)
