View Full Version : Sure, this is all about the blue marble... but...

Our Blue marble doesn't quite feel 'at home' without all its neighbors.
So, what I'm suggesting here is that you add stars to the sky!
Of course, this could easily expand to a much larger project (which I would assume would require more programmers :P):
-you could emulate the sun & earth's rotation, shadows and all
-multiple star maps - much like how you handle zooming in now - go into 'star' mode, the camera would turn around - and you could zoom into your favorite nebula and be treated to a nice high resolution picture from Hubble.
-hell, as the product matures, you could even add more planets. I know there's a great deal of data on Mars - the red planet would sure be fun to explore!
But at the very least add some stars, please ;) It just feels unnatural without

I think you are looking for celestia:
http://www.shatters.net/celestia/
Though it is not as 'comprehensive' about Earth information as NASA World Wind, it tries to be more of a space simulator. As far as I know there are datasets for Celestia to import for example Blue Marble, the images used in World Wind when zoomed out.

It looks like they may already have that in mind. If you look in the program's data folder, there is a folder called "planets". Right now only Earth is in there, but the fact that they included a folder called "planets" makes me think they intended to have more than one planet in there.

This program will be extended in the future. Actually, one upcoming feature will be access to the Hubble Space Telescope images. :)

this being Nasa and all
prettymuch all of the Celestia functionality would be right at home in WorldWind. i could just list it all, but you guys are probably all familure with the program and it's features.
i especially look forward to WorldWind being programmed with all space missions, so i can virtually watch earthwide launches & missions of whatever spacecraft take my fancy.

Once an OS X version is available, it would be wonderful to be able to choose weather information, especially the QuikSCAT winds (makes sense that World Wind would show world winds :D ) http://coastwatch.noaa.gov/cw_dataprod.html has so much that it would be great to use World Wind as the aggregator.
cheers--and congrats again to the project. I hope the Windows demand leaves some time for *X development :)

the OS X porting effort is already underway (albeit in my "free" time... :P )

Why not get revenge on slashdot--and post your request for help there? :P This project is sooooo much about what slashdotters should admire . . .
WW's
Celestia is truly mind boggling and has a fabulas scope, but it's unable fetch detail data in real time. WordWind is a great program and I expect someday it will support the other planets. In the meantime you might want to check out Earthviewer (http://www.keyhole.com/) which cuurrently supports Mars and as well as Earth. There is also a Forum (http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=mars) specifically for Mars.

I really don't wanna wait 20,000 years though for the next star to apear. ;)
Celestia isn't about "real time", it is more about Date, time, location.. what will I see?
I found out one thing though.. DON'T run Celestia and WW at the same time.. ouch :)

UNless you have HyperThreading. WW has no effect on my system whatsoever :)

I do though.. maybe it is because of the 512 ram..
Hrm.. wait.. I think I know.. I have Folding@home installed... bet that was runnig as well (it takes 50% of the CPU)

Tom: I wouldn't want to wait 20,000 years either. I was actually referring to the ability to fetch additional datasets and higher resolution data over the web from a server like worldwind and earthviewer. I'd love to see a merger of Celestia and WW's capabilities.
