Nerd vs. Geek

I'm curious as to how the two words are percieved - where I come from (Pacific Northwest), "Geek" is the preferred word, where "Nerd" is more derogatory (as in an insult). What's the case with you? Also, post what region of the US/World you live in, along with any thoughts on the subject.

I posted neither as in the UK most people dont mind being called either, personally I prefer being called a nerd (too much watching revenge of the nerds, only the first two of course)

I met a new-zealand person recently who thought a 'geezah' was the same as 'geek' ho ho
mind you she also didnt want to go to scotland because she'd heard stories about the midgets that come out at night. (midges)
