There's no automatic way to go to eye level in the current version. If you would like it considered for inclusion in a future version and if no-one else has already mentioned it, you might want to post it in the "Suggestion Box" forum.

If you hold down your right mouse button and move the mouse around, you change the angle at which you view the world.
I think holding down the right mouse button and pulling all the way back will bring you to eye-level.

Firmware, awesome find.
You program devs out there, I've read some of the documentation of the raw data at the link Firmware provided. The hgt files within the zips seem to be just sampled two byte data lines, SRTM-1 having more samples (or 'resolution') per file than the SRTM-3. (I could be wrong on this)
I have no idea how Worldwind uses this type of data, or how it is originally stored on the JPL server, but just notice that it all seems to be converted to a greyscale tif file.
I presume like many other graphic terrain programs, that the 256 greyscale colors represent peaks or wells, and WorldWind reads these tif tiles and renders height according to the scale color.
So, is there a way to have WorldWind convert these hgt files to .tif for us?

we actually use that data, however, we apply a filling process to that data to get rid of the radar backscatter errors.
I am actually going to release that data in a new tiling scheme very shortly (within a couple weeks) and this is in preparation for a new World Wind version that will utilize it in a more independant fashion than the current WMS/JPL scheme. I'll provide the data at various resolutions (and physical sizes) so ppl can put it on their own servers, as well as have it on their local systems. It's big though... :)
All the data World Wind uses is free and publically available. Even the Landsat is available from the GLCF, although if you want a global mosaic, it's a few terabytes. :)
