View Full Version : How do I add cache files like deckard1?

Upon downloading and opening deckerd1.zip and israel-amitsur.rar, I see that they contain the customary numbered folders but I'm not sure where to copy them to in WW's cache.

I'm a rank newbie to this, a condition for which I apologize, but the only hint I have as to how such files are to be integrated into WW's cache is by having looked at some of the official add-on zip files available at the NASA site. These have a folder structure and names that correspond to WW's cache:

earth
----High-res Terrain mapped...
--------JPL Global Landsat ... (Visible Bands..)
-------------0
-------------1
-------------2

... etc. But when confronted with deckerd1, for example, it contains just the numbered folders so I don't know whether their contents go into the Visible Bands folder or the False Color bands or what. This is where my reverse-engineering ability, such as it is, collapses into mush. Halp, please.

Dear reader,

Okay, so I screwed up and accidentally posted my question twice. I tried deleting the first one (it had typos) but couldn't.

Nonetheless, Nice Nowak responded and ultimately I ended up in an IRC chat, a technology about which I know NOTHING. I guess it's good to be humbled once in a while.

So Nowak was at the IRC chat but left, then Llynix reached out and told me that the contents of the numbered folders go into JPL Global Landsat Mosaic (Visible Bands) folder. I asked how I was supposed to have figured that out but he didn't say, instead suggesting that I use Nowak's alternate worldlayers.xml file and mirror. But I figure people aren't posting these cache files for exercise -- there must be others like me who want to download and use them -- so I still think it's reasonable to ask for some pointers about where to copy cache files to, if they don't come zipped in a self-explanatory folder structure. I appreciated Llynix's help but now I'm looking at some more zip files like:

cache04_v1_2c.zip
cache03_v1_2c.zip
and landsatdata3.zip

none of which are in any folders, so again I ask: which WW cache folder should these be placed in?

Just unzip over your exsisting cache diretory. I didn't look at the others, but I imagine they are the same perhaps.

...

Just open them and see yourself how they look, you should be able to distinguish between visible and false bands. Want viewer for .dds ? google. Names like JPL Global Landsat ... (Visible Bands..) come from WorldLayers.xml

Most of the cache files on twobeds.com are the Visible band as they were the first ones to emerge when people needed data to look at :)

I'm pretty certain it says in the thread I sent you in e-mail.

I would look up for you exactly what's where, but the PC I've the datapacks on is playing up, sorry! :)

The zip files named Cache0?_v1_2c.zip, where ? is a number, can be installed by just dragging them onto the C:\Program Files\NASA\World Wind v1.2\ folder, and the contents will be placed in the appropriate subfolders. A zip file named landsatdata3.zip, as example, did not work this way. So there's no apparent rule to this. I think if people are going to provide parts of the cache for download there should be standard by which everyone adheres, preferably duplicating the format of the zip files available from NASA's "Add-on" section.

There pretty much should be by now. The first ones were just immediate reactions, and most people could work it out, because they knew WW quite well.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that by default everything is Visible, unless specified otherwise in the contents on my page.

Or, if there's just cache folder, simply copy that into the main WW folder.

If you want, post the folder trees for each one you're stuck on and I'll tell you where they should go :)
