I'll have separate hotspots database so that people can publish hotspot right from application and there will be links to discuss hotspot that will automatically create appropriate topic in that forum

Ah right.

Nowak is recoding WWC, so maybe in a couple of weeks we'll be able to code up WW2D to interface with WWC, too.

WW2D seems to work pretty well. Does anyone know if it can be made to run in an applet? The thought here is to use this via the web.

thanks,
Dan

no, its not possible as far as I know because JOGL can't be used in applet. only variant is Java WebStart so that user can (download and) start it right from browser

thanks for the quick reply. Having a 3D rendering window as an applet or activeX control would be pretty useful...ala Skyline's TerraExplorer PRO. I do realize though, it is difficult to compare these two software packages.

WW2D still is very cool, thanks,

make sure you have enough permissions to write to /Library/Java/Extensions/, eg. try opening this path and copying something there..

Google Maps runs faster (in javascript ?) !!!

Is that all the performence you get out of JOGL or is there something i missed ?

Note: i was thinking at looking how to extend WW2D to the third dimension... but i'm not so sure now... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif

PC, AMD Athlon XP2100+ 1.7GHz, Win XP Pro SP2, 512 Mo RAM, nVidia GeForce 4 MX 440 (not the best) and latest JDK/JOGL...

I'm new to Java/JOGL so I may not have an optimal config yet. Still I feel that the frame rate drops quickly when the window gets bigger - with WW2D and some of the JOGL demos.

Anyway, i started to play around with JOGL (using Eclipse SDK) and i believe there is some potential for a Java version of WW. Since you already did a big part of the work, i think it would be worth tying to expand WW2D to the third dimension.

A first step could be to start mapping the tiles on a sphere with the camera moving around and looking down - that would solve the distortion at high latitudes. Next step would be to deal with terrain elevation and perspective...

What tools are you using for WW2D (Eclipse, Ant...) ?

Installs & starts OK for me. I'm using Ubuntu 5.10 on a Sony VAIO laptop with Sun JRE 1.5 (1.6GHz Pentium M, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9600, 1920x1200 screen). The layer manager and other functions appear to work, but it's really slow, especially in fullscreen. In fact, it runs faster in an 8-year-old Dell with Windows2000 (450MHz Pentium 3, 384MB RAM, ATI Rage Pro, 1600x1200 screen).

The biggest difficulty seems to be accessing the tile server:
java.net.UnknownHostException: bccf8c937549dbbe.tileservice.worldwindce ntral.org
How can I get WW2D to access the wwc tile server, or to access an already-existing local cache?

Best Regards,
John.

EDIT UPDATE 2006.03.19 style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Upgrading drivers from standard ati to accellerated fglrx cured the slowness issue. Ubuntu users should use the commands:
% get the driver from repository
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
% make sure it's loaded by default at boot
echo fglrx | sudo tee -a /etc/modules
% tell X to use accellerated driver instead of old one
sudo sed -i -e ’s/”ati”/”fglrx”/’ /etc/X11/xorg.conf
% new driver will be loaded at next boot

A new patched JAR file from pronvit improved tile server access (still some issues, however).

as I remember NWW doing updates and redraws all the time, rising CPU usage to 100% and slowing down itself. i don't understand whi this isn't fixed still (or maybe fixed?) WW2D doing updates and redraws only when needed.

also WW2D is faster because it's not 3D and because of some optimizations of tiles and pathlists drawing

They do if it's a real self-extracting zip. Unfortunately, the installer .exes that people usually make here don't work that way.

Try java webstart. There is a way to include native library (here JOGL) in webstart.

For Applet probably impossible, without changing the cache system to make it working on the server side...

Currently I have poor internet connection and can't upload binary distribution but CVS at http://sf.net/projects/ww2d has already everything that will be in next version, this includes (in comparison with 0.99.87):

*New modern UI
*Scripting support - write your powerful scripts in Java-like language right in WW2D
*WMS support - WMS servers was supported before but now with simple configuration
*Internationalization - English and Russian UI currently available
*Improved layer manager - configure colors/fonts/opacity with several clicks and save as many configurations as you want for loading later
*Bookmarks - instantly mark interesting place with icon and short description (syncing with server is in development)
*Add-on manager - see what add-ons with what versions are installed, pack your own add-on for distribution as single-file package or install such package
*Support for multi-user environments - each user can have separate configuration and set of add-ons but share single cache while WW2D itself can be now installed in read-only location
*Native DevIL library is used for faster image loading
*Support for downloading/autoupdating image overlays from internet and for legends for ImageOverlay layers
*Setings editor - easily configure many internal parameters
*Full support for working behind proxy server
*Select-area-to-zoom feature and distance measurement
*Much better support for image layers in Mercator projection
*Large number of other improvements and internal changes for faster and more stable operation

I have used an XSD->class generator castor for KML parsing in Java.It is very easy to use afterwards you can slowly add render methods to each object.

yes, netbeans.
No plans. I want to keep it 2D (3D mode may be available optionally but 2D is must-have for me). So I'm not going (and don't have time) to do anything 3D-related myself but of course will help if someone will maintain 3D part.

Yes, maybe this is good idea however it seems I like to do more things manually to get cleaner and more optimized code. I'll look what such generators produce.

I appreciate the help on my grammar, I really do, otherwise it would get more worser.
Then FYI, "more worser" is quite overkill.

more bad = worse
more good = better

most bad = worst
most good = best

more worser = more more badder, which is not proper English quite at all. :)

nlneilson

"more worser" ~ pun for my grammar

I downloaded WW2d Version_0.99.88 exe, just a blank screen, no images except a rectangular box in the left upper corner with the continents outlined and a line from the upper left to the lower right of that small box.
I have installed Java 1.6 (Platform SE 6 Version 6.0.0.105)
This is on my latest computer, fired up the previous computer that had WW2d working before, same thing, no images. Had also updated Java on that computer, had not run WW2D since then.

Has anyone been able run WW2D with Java Platform SE 6 or have I managed to mess something up?

edit: Just a suggestion. If WW2D is to continue to be supported have a core that will run on the latest platform of Java. Have everything else that is just extra bells and whistles as plugins or add-ons. As ww has done so well, developers could fix the bugs and send you the code, you could modify the bug fix, include it as it is or whatever. It is/was a good program, fast, minimal cpu/memory usage and in Java.

Try the Java SDK 1.5 (that is SE 5 - zzz @ Sun versioning) instead. I don't know that there's any changes that'll break stuff, but it might matter...

Problem solved, WW2d uninstalled, all related files deleted and hd defragged.
I will wait for the ww java version.

I was not implying there is anything wrong with WW2d, just that I had wasted way too many hours on it. Checked the posts by pronvit and the last in this forum was 8/31/2006. Initially had problems even downloading the source.
Checked his site, even sent him an an email with no response re idw-gpl.jar, which he knew was corrupt, and from a post on the forum at his site "download them from appropriate websites". Do a google search and see if you can find a site to download that file, good luck.
That file may be just adding a bit of "cuteness" to his ap but NetBeans 6.0 will not even open the source because of this error. Can not get into the code to try and find and try and eliminate any reference to this file.
If WW2D will not run under the latest version of Java 1.6 do not want to reload the older version just for his ap, especially since I can not do anything with the source without idw-gpl.jar

I tried to use this on my Ubuntu Linux computer, but it didn't seem to work...

Maybe it has something to do with my horrible video card?

No, it doesn't seem to work either...

jacob@ubuntu:~/Desktop/ww$ java BasicDemo.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: BasicDemo/jar

And with the web start one:

This typical of 'old' video cards or dated video drivers. Did you update your drivers?

Did you update your drivers?

Still didn't work. I guess it is too old :(
