View Full Version : WW refuses to work correctly
I´m pretty well fed up. I´ve been trying to get WW to work for three days with no success at all!
No matter what I do, it will not connect to any server. Place finder doesn´t work. Cached data only works in level0 resolution visible bands for most places and in others it shows nothing, even though the area is supposed to be covered by the cache I downloaded. Animated earth and wms browser won´t connect.
I read the threads and the faq in this forum, but this was of no help. Ok, here is a detailed description of my problems:
- It will not connect to any server. I tried with or without firewall (Windows XP firewall is allways disabled), proxi server is not activated. It doesn´t even try, there is no network activity when WW is trying to connect to the internet.
- Place finder finds no names: No matter what I type, I´ll always get the aswer, that there are 0 places found.
- USGS maps won´t work at all. It seems like you have to be in the states to be able to download this data. Great, lock out the rest of the world, after all the USA is no part of it anyway. (This is sarcasm, no offence meant!)
- The Landsat7 pictures only work in visible bands, false coulor bands don´t work, even if the needed data is in the cache.
I tried to change the the regional layout, but that made no difference, I turned off firewall and virus protection (I really wouldn´t do this for long), I looked into the internet settings of ie, but nothing changed. Last not least, I installed the .net update.
Setup of my computer:
WinXP prof build 2600 with most updates (no sp2)
Duron 1000 (overclocked to 1090 mhz)
1 GB RAM (181 mhz)
Nvidia Geforce 2 mx400
150GB Hardisk
2000/192 kbit DSL internet connection
location: germany
Anybody got any ideas, what´s the matter? Otherwise I´ll use it the way it is and wait for new versions, hopefully with less problems for me.

You are blind if you didn't find the answer to this question with all your reading.

I'm going to try to make this as plain as possible. Also if you happen to have sight difficulties this may help out.

I assume your refering to the pictures you've downloaded from the add-ons section. You may try turning up the font on your browser on that page to adjust for your failing eyesight. Clearly it describes what kind of data is in the pack. Download one with false colour and your set.

Ok, I´ll look again. I thought I tried everything I saw, but your answer makes me think, I missed something.

This might be plain to you, but I lived in the states for many years and it is one of the most beautiful counties there is. And I find it hard to accept, that I am locked out, just because I don´t happen to be there right now. The name should be meant as a description of the contained data, not as a description from where it can be obtained! So I´m not blind, you´re downright wrong! And if you´re not, then americans shouldn´t have access to any data aside from Landsat7 for the rest of the world! Sounds childish to me!

Ok, ok, I still have some problems identifying the names of the dds files. And I already have glasses and a 20" monitor. It works fine with the Yosemite false color maps. It´s 6 am here. sorry.

How come there is USGS data in the cached data? Not from private persons, but in the data supplied by Nasa itself. Well, I guess you were joking! Ha, ha,very funny!

Because the people building the cache files are nice enough to also add that in?

Eh? Huh? What the? Ok, you have lost me 100% now.. I have 0 clue what the heck you are even talking about. Take a step back, breathe deeply "In a nose, out a mouth".
Ok, USGS maps can be gotten anywhere outside the US. Go to the MSN terra server.. get all you want there. You have never heard of server issues? I mean we have mentioned only about 300 times that the LanSat servers just can not keep up with requests. And that the "c" release of WW had some adverse affects on the USGS downloads.
I can get them and not get them.. depends on the mood of the day I guess.
And your right, we don't get anything other than LandSat for the rest of the world. We are still tracking down sources of data and running into "Licensing issues" with data.
I beleive someone did track down Eastern Australia detailed images. Should be somewhere in the forum.
I don't know what side of the bed you got up on... but you better go back to bed a little longer..

I'm pretty well totally innit fedup blingin like man. I've been crusading on the forums for weeks answering all the questions which are in the bleedin' FAQ with no success at all!
It won't connect to any new user. Thread finder [aka EYES] doesn't work. Eyes only work in level0 resolution ; they only connect to error messages and link this to instant moaning.
I read the threads but found no pretty pictures so I didn't actually read them. Here's my problems:
> Information will not connect with my brain. My irrational and crazy thoughts flow straight through my fingers, help I cannot stop it!
> The server which is down doesn't work. How useless! An [i]offline server doesn't work!
> The UNITED STATES mapping doesn't contain the rest of the world! How RUDE, for a survey of the US to not contain any other countries!
[This post is parody, and maximum offence is meant, for that is how you learn. Take a biscuit, a warm cup of milk, go back to bed, and get out of the correct side :) ]
The other issues:
Place finder does work - what've you tried searching for?
I don't know about the false-colour stuff because I haven't tried it.

Yes, you´re absolutely right and I´m very thankful for them to include some of the USGS data. It´s amasing to look at eg at the Yosemite close up in 3d. The USA has numerous natural wonders and almost every kind of natural terrain there is.
I just don´t understand, why the data can only be used online from inside the USA. Military areas are blacked out anyway and geological interest is international. It is kind of frustrating to read all those posts about how fascinating this data is and to only have access to so little of it. It´s like using some cripled shareware version which you can´t buy.
And then being told that I´m blind and that the name of the data shows me why I can´t access it is downright offencive.
I started this thread in the hope of getting some hints to my problems using WW, instead I got told I´m blind and got offended. Sorry if I overreacted a little, but I was pretty frustrated and tired at the time. ;)
Ups, There was only one post of Tomservo when I started writing my reply. Like I said, I was tired and frustrated. I live in germany, so I didn´t get up on the wrong side of bed, but should have gone to it in the first place.
Why I thought that the USGS data can only be accessed from inside the US. I thought Llynix tried to tell me that. And I remember reading lots of posts that said that there are no server problems for the USGS data.
To try to find out, if the place finder works, I just typed in names of big cities. (New Yorks, Boston, Frankfurt, Berlin, London). Then I zoomed into america and germany and took names from the screen and tried them.
I did´t mean to offend anybody! I just thought the support forum was the right place to ask, when you don´t know what to do to get some helpful hints.

You can get all the urban are imagry there. Just because their is a server issue in WW doesn't mean only the US viewers can see it.
As for data ammount... *checks cache folder*
I am at 4 gigs almost of data....

No wonder you guys reacted the way you did. I didn´t mean that I was fed up with WW or you. I meant Computers and especially WindowsXP. Trying around, reading manuals but getting nowhere. And everytime I needed a break I tried WW! But how should you know, if I don´t say so.
Please accept my appologies.
@TheBeanSprout
And thanks for the sarcasm. It really made me turn on my brain. All answers were there, I just didn´t see them.
Well, almost. I still get 0 found places.
Sorry for wasting your time and thanks again for the information!

It's ok. We try to help when we can. (We're not experts yet.. but we seem to be fooling people about that ;) ) There are bugs and issues and the developer does know most of them and is working on fixes.
Outside people are also starting to look at the code as well and make suggestions and ideas.

Aha, fear not. But still, the answers were in the FAQ ;)
As for misunderstanding Llynix....well....I thought it was pretty clear, but for someone who's had no sleep....possibly an easy mistake to make...it's a survey of the US, not a survey for the US ...ein Abriss der US, nicht ein Abriss für der US :) (ich weiss, dass mein Deutsch nicht gut ist, aber ich hoffe das Sie verstehen können)

Yes I know. As I said it was a misunderstanding. I think Llynix was beeing sarcasic but I thought he was serious. And looking at US foreign politics latetely makes you think anything is possible. Luckily it isn´t!
Thanks for the link. It´ll take some time to look at all the links I found in this forum, but this will definately be one of the first I´ll explore!

I worked and played around on my computer for 14-15 hours yesterday. Definately too much! Today after a good nights/mornings sleep I just don´t understand myself!
Your german is good, you even remembered the Du/Sie issue and you put the capitals in the right place. Almost perfect! :)

Hey, I think I've fixed it!
I ran the program directly from Windows explorer and the search function burst into life. I then added this to my shortcut - in the 'Start in' field: "C:\Program Files\NASA\World Wind v1.2". Hey presto search works ok.
I think the program was having trouble finding the files.
