How long does it take to load a detailed image? ive zoomed in on top of my city, and am waiting there its all blurry.. nothing visible... how do I get it to be sharper?

It's supposed to take a few seconds, but due to being put on slashdot, all the servers we access data from are being crippled. We really would appreciate it if you would be patient while this sudden storm of popularity passes and the servers can catch up.

I see a red rectangle that changes location after a few minutes... and then after 5 mins.. the program freezes and says out of virtual memory..
I have 1 GB RAM and 2GB allocated to virtual memory...

Also, the entire time the application is running, it uses 50-100% of the CPU, why?

I think this is related to the data servers being unable to handle the amount of current usage. This should get better in a day or two once people start spreading their usage time.

World Wind uses the similar technologies to most high-end video games, and as such, requires a large percentage of the CPU. This will get optimized in future releases, but we're still heavily in the Research & Development stage.

I am sure would be somewhat complicated to develop, but a future option may be an integrated bit torrent client. That seems like a great use of an application like this. Especially since many people try to view images of their own area, so nearby users would then share data.

Does the circular Nasa logo on the top right of the graphic show when images are being downloaded? I was trying to figure out how to tell when you have reached the maximum zoom level.

We have had others suggest to take a bit torrent approach to data delivery, and it would definitely be complicated to develop, but we are looking into it. It does make a lot of sense, especially when we get the kind of attention that we are today. :D

The NASA logo means that you are downloading imagery (attempting anyways). However, for the TerraServer (USGS) stuff, there is no icon for that, and you should just get the red box.

First off I'm from the slashdot crowd, and I'd like to appologize on behalf. :)

Secondly, a bit-torrent for the distrubution of the client program is both feasable and allready underway. You can check the forums here for links.

It would be nice if Nasa set up an official torrent for the client and it would GREATLY reduce bandwidth in that area.

As for the map data, I understand a torrent like system (while it would be cool) would require a re-write of the code.

However a few suggestions from what I've seen of it so far.

1) A download indicator in the form of a progress bar on the bottom or even a small mention of percentage would be nice. I understand the nasa logo is supposed to tell you that, however this is not at all immediatly obvious. All I see is a nasa logo in the upper right hand corner that links to the webpage. It doesn't throb or anything.

2) When I zoom in to far it seems to pass up the map and scroll to the other side of the world. It looks and feels very buggy at this point. Zooming out fixes this. If (by some chance of pure luck) I've actually managed to download the map data it doesn't do this.

3) There doesn't seem to be ANY cacheing of map data. While I don't know the ammounts of data involved, it would seem to me that once I've zoomed in and gotten the map I'm looking for.. that map should stay on my system. Perhaps some sort of management system and a few advanced settings could emulate this. All I'm interested in is a few sections of the united states. But if I try to look in texas, download partial maps.. then go to New York and again load maps, then back to texas.. wait.. all the maps are gone and have to reload.

4) I would almost cater to say you have TOO MANY labels for places. For where I live every church is tagged. I live in the bible belt. There are so many yellow tags around the place that I can't see a one of them. Also in the layer manager I didn't see a box to uncheck the churches (although maybe it's listed under something completly different)

5) I don't know wiether this is my issue or the softwares, but links clicked on in the program load up in Internet Explorer regardless. They do not go to firefox my default browser. This is really annoying for me (could anyone clue me in as to wiether this is fixable on my end? I have a few other apps that do the same thing)

The UI is right on the nose btw. I had no problems zooming around the earth with no instructions.

Does look like an excellent program however. I very much look forward to playing with it in a few days when the bandwidth issues settle down.

It's 3:38am EST, and i'm having problems connecting to the server, is there just that much traffic?

This is an awesome tool, perhaps some higher ups at Nasa should give this server it's own T3 line (with massive uploading bandwidth) and use it for publicity. People around the country (world?) will love this program when it gets the bugs worked out.

I would just like to thank the developers for this. A few weeks ago, there was stories in the News about public access to satellite images, and how the patriot act might prevent access due to 'national security'.

Screw the Pat Act, let information be free!

i'm from slashdot, and i would also like to apologize.

Well, I posted some 'coralized' (cached) links and an ed2k link on Slashdot, so no apologies from me ;-)

The label thing is a bit of nuisance yes. Maybe you could request (or guesstimate) the area individual text would take on the screen and only display a layer 'deeper' if say.. only 35% would be covered at maximum (aka. when no overlap) by all the visible tags.

has anyone ever seen a high-res image with this program? and how long did that take to load?

I guess I'll have to try again in a week or two if the traffic remains that high!

I am yet another slashdot user, maybe we should have warned nasa about this... we are the bandwidth distroyers

I'll address a couple issues:

- There is a caching system for World Wind. It caches everything you download up to 2GB, then it starts getting rid of the Least-Recently Used files. If you downloaded something and it's not showing up, most likely the updating system in World Wind was trying to catch up or there was a bug that popped up that prevented the updating of visible images.

- Yes, the amount of placenames is a bit of a nuissance, and we're working on ways to remedy this problem. We still want those placenames in there, we just don't want them to take up so much real estate on the screen.

- We really didn't need a loading bar for the downloading of the higher resolution data because usually it only took a couple seconds before you start seeing "tiles" start to load in. This might be a necessity if the servers being accessed cannot provide the data in a timely manner.
